"Where the material ends, art begins." ~ Etienne Hajdu

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.  Art is knowing which ones to keep."  ~Scott Adams

"Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." ~Pablo Picasso

"Life beats down and crushes the soul, and art reminds you that you have one."  ~Stella Adler

My hope is to create art that is innovative and moving. The subject matter varies as does the medium. I believe that art is communication.

When I make art, what happens is sort of an internal conversation between me and the painting, sculpture, mixed media or whatever I'm working on. The result of that conversation expresses itself in the finished work.

Once the project is finished, my conversation with the piece stops and a new one begins with whoever comes in contact with it. I may paint a painting that for me feels whimsical, but someone might look at it and feel melancholy or vice versa. I don't intentionally try to communicate directly to the viewer through my work. I let the piece speak for itself.

This approach is very flexible. I sometimes have a general idea of where I want to go with a painting, but as I work it, it tends to take on a life of it's own. Sometimes my art is easy to make and sometimes I fight with it a bit. It's like any relationship, there are smooth conversations and challenging conversations. But I find them all valuable.
